The Art of Storytelling: What Wedding Speeches Can Teach Us About Connection

When was the last time you felt completely drawn into someone else’s story? Whether you’ve been a lifelong friend or are attending as someone’s plus one, a great wedding speech has the power to captivate, connect, and make you feel part of something bigger.

Recently, I attended a wedding where I was 100% in the “plus one” category. My husband’s childhood friend was tying the knot, and whilst I’d only met the couple a handful of times, I was excited to celebrate. Little did I know, the speeches would leave such a lasting impression.

From happy tears to hearty laughs, each speech painted a different picture of the couple, weaving together a beautiful story of love, family, and friendship.

  • The groom’s dad kicked things off, sharing sweet childhood memories of his son as a four-year-old who could make friends with anyone.

  • The mother of the bride followed with a heartfelt poem she had written just for the occasion—a touching ode to love and new beginnings.

  • Finally, the school friends brought the laughter, recounting travel misadventures and hilarious anecdotes from the couple’s clubbing days.

What struck me most was how unique each speech was. One nostalgic, one creative, and one bursting with humour. Yet together, they created a complete and perfect story of two people starting an exciting new chapter.

What Wedding Speeches Teach Us About Connection

This experience was a powerful reminder of the value of individuality and perspective. In any setting, whether it’s a wedding, a business meeting, or even your marketing strategy, we all approach things differently. But when these unique perspectives come together, they create something truly special.

For small businesses and professional associations, this is particularly relevant. Your brand’s story is made up of many voices: your team, your clients and members, your values and your mission. Embracing these diverse perspectives is what helps your message connect and resonate with your audience.

Building Connection Through Storytelling

As a Virtual Assistant and Online Business Manager, one of my passions is helping small businesses and professional associations craft and share their unique stories. Whether it’s through strategic marketing campaigns, social media management, or day-to-day business operations, my goal is to bring your brand’s individuality to life while making it relatable to your audience.

Just like those wedding speeches, every small business and organisation has a story to tell. And with the right support, you can share yours in a way that engages and inspires.

Shoutout to Local Venues

Also, for my Perth friends, if you’re planning a wedding or event, the South of Perth Yacht Club is a venue worth considering. With stunning waterfront views and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, it’s the perfect backdrop for unforgettable celebrations.
